Happy Veterans Day from the Pam’s VAS Team!
Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, is a federal holiday and is observed each year on November 11th. From veterans of World War I & II, to the Vietnam War, to the War in Iraq and the War in Afghanistan, Pam’s VAS would love to tell our troops – past and present – how much both we and America appreciates them. So, as a tribute to our beloved Veterans, this post serves as our way to say thank-you for all that you do!
What is Veterans Day?
The United States originally observed Armistice Day. Major hostilities of World War I formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Former United States President, Woodrow Wilson, first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11, 1919 in which he stated, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with lots of pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” Armistice Day then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954.
(Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who gave their lives and those who perished while in service.)*
Take Part in Thanking all those who Serve!
You can draw a picture or write a thank you note to give to a veteran. This simple gesture lets our veterans know that their service is not forgotten and still appreciated. If you don’t know a veteran, you can use Operation Gratitude to deliver the message.
“Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to New Recruits, Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors, Care Givers and to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed overseas. Our mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military. Each package contains donated product valued at $75-100 and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than One Million Care Packages.”
You can also donate gently used items to your local Disabled American Veteran’s (DAV) chapter.
Once again, Pam’s VAS would like to wish all Veterans a very Happy Veterans Day!
