Happy Thanksgiving from Pam’s VAS!
Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that holds many different meanings amongst those who celebrate it. Apart from Beyond the turkey dinner, football and yes, the pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving is a time for family, reflection and gratitude. From gathering around the dinner table, taking turns sharing what one is thankful for . . to a day full of family gatherings . . Thanksgiving is the one day out of the year where your ears are filled with positive messages; words that warm your heart. With all the sad and negative things going on in our world, absorb all of the positive energy around you and let this day be a day you reflect on what you are truly blessed with.
When asked what you are thankful for, what things populate your mind? If you really give it a thought, there are many things we fail to recognize. Of course the majority of us are thankful for family, friends, food, shelter, wellness, etc., but what about role model citizens in the community or innovators? It is not that frequently we hear these things shared by those around the Thanksgiving dinner table.
Pam’s VAS would like to challenge you to share at least one unconventional thing you are thankful for this Thanksgiving. The challenge starts off with the below.
Wang Yan – From Millionaire to Caretaker of Homeless Dogs – By Choice!
Defining the act of true selflessness, Wang Yan invested his money in purchasing a canine slaughterhouse and turned it into a shelter for homeless, stray dogs. His story will restore your faith in humanity.
“I do not accept monetary donations,” he explained. “I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help build a home for these 200 dogs.”Wang Yan
After visiting a canine slaughterhouse in search of his missing dog, Yang was set on establishing a shelter for the many homeless dogs. He began his journey by investing in the purchase of the exact slaughterhouse he had visited in search of his canine friend.
Since opening the shelter, which currently houses around 200 strays, Yang has spent millions rescuing over 2,000 stray dogs. Not only did Yan save these animals from being slaughtered and sold in a Chinese meat market, he as also found loving homes for over 1000 of them! Though Yan is now faced with serious debt, he refuses to accept donations, “I do not accept monetary donations,” he explained. “I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help build a home for these 200 dogs.” Yan’s heart belongs to providing a better life to the homeless canines throughout Changchun city.
Yan is one good example of a model citizen that deserves thanks. There are not that many people on this earth who could compare to the selflessness this man exudes. There are many stories of people dedicating their time, money and life to humans; there are also many heroic stories relating to animal welfare; however, there are very few stories about people dedicating their life and giving up EVERYTHING for the welfare of stray animals. Let us also not forget that in China, it is not abnormal to find dog meat being sold and consumed. This makes Yan’s story all the more special!
